Year One Curriculum Information
Terms 5 and 6 (2017)
I am delighted to say we are now beginning our summer term. The children have been working extremely hard this year and I am very confident that this will continue.
Below are a few changes to the general routine for the children in Terms 5 and 6:
Class Assembly: The children will be preforming their class assembly on Wednesday 3rd May. I look forward to seeing you all there!
Monday Afternoons- These will be again be covered by Mrs Buckley, who will be taking the children for a PE slot and Show and Tell session. Show and tell will again be focusing on the children’s phonics sounds. A rota for show and tell is sent out every week at the bottom of the homework.
PE Kits- The children will need to have their PE kits in on a Monday and Tuesday for term 5. Please ensure that the children have a PE kit in school which is labelled. They will also need a sun hat and full water bottle in school every day as we are approaching the warmer months.
Phonics Screening- As you are aware, the children will be taking part in a phonics screening assessment in June, preparation for this will continue.
Class Trip- We will be having a class trip to Hastings. This trip links very nicely to our ‘Sensational Seaside’ topic. A letter and more information to follow.
Transition Morning: The children will be given the opportunity to have a morning to look at their new classroom and find out a little bit about life in year two! A date for this will be given nearer the time.
Our learning in Year One
A brief description of the Y1 curriculum for Terms 5 and 6 follows. However, please note that assessment guides planning and teaching for the class, so some pupils may require further support, whereas others will need extending and challenging.
English- Our English focus for Terms 5 and 6 will ‘Story Writing’. We will be looking at the main features needed to write a well-planned, detailed story. We will also be looking at ‘Diary Writing’ and ‘Fairy Tales’. Our non-fiction work will focus on writing information texts and weather reports.
Pupils will continue to follow the Jolly Phonics Grammar Scheme and widening their phonic knowledge. We will be revising sounds already learnt and deepening our understanding of the different sounds in preparation for our phonics screening in June. A new grammar focus this term will be looking at adverbs. This will link nicely to our writing, where we will work on applying this new knowledge to make our writing much more exciting! Pupils will continue to have the opportunity to work in a role-play situation and take part in various drama activities.
Maths- Our daily maths lessons will continue to focus on numbers to 100, adding, subtracting, making sequences, patterns and applying this knowledge to money. The children will be developing new skills and be solving simple multiplication and division problems. We will continue to develop our problem solving skills, in order to apply our learning to a range of different situations. This term we will also be learning about fractions and how to find ‘quarters’ and half’ of an object, shape or quantity. We will also be working on our measurement of capacity/volume and learning time (both calendar and clock).
ICT- Pupils have been learning to use IPads and will continue to do so. Pupils will also continue to visit the ICT suite on a Monday morning. Our computing topics for Term 5 and 6 are; ‘We are story tellers’ which links nicely with our writing focus and ‘We are celebrating’ which involves learning about the use of the internet. We be stressing the importance of using the internet safely and learning continuously about e-safety. Computing will be used to support all curriculum areas whenever possible.
Science-The Science module for the term is learning about ‘Plants’. This is alongside the module ‘Seasonal Change’ which is being covered throughout the year. These will both be taught with an emphasis on practical investigation and exploration.
History/Geography- For terms 5 and 6 our topic is ‘Sensational Seaside’. The children will be researching and learning about UK seaside towns in the past and comparing them to now. For this we will also be taking a class trip to Hastings.
Religious Education- In RE we will be studying Hinduism and Judaism.
Art and Design/ Design and Technology- Our art work will have a focus on making sculptures. We will also be continuing to explore collage and painting. In DT we will be looking at healthy food. We will be designing and making our own healthy snack.
Music/ PHSE- We will continue to follow the ‘Music Express’ scheme for our music lessons and the SEAL programme for PSHE, where we will look at ‘relationships’ and ‘changes’.
Thank you all very much again for your support this year. I am looking forward to another very successful term!
